‘1st BATTALION, THE ROYAL WELSH – OPERATION MOSHTARAK’

Commissioned by 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh.
At 0400 hours on 13th February 2010 a combined force of 1,200 coalition troops simultaneously landed on twelve objectives in the largest aviation assault ever conducted by the British Army.
The assault force was lead by 1 Royal Welsh Battle Group, partnered with Afghan National Army and Police units, French mentors, an Estonian Infantry Company and the Brigade Reconnaissance Force. The force was inserted and supported by 45 British, American and Canadian aircraft. The aim of Operation MOSHTARAK was to clear the Taliban strongholds in central Helmand, establish security and support the restoration of Afghan governance.
Following a sharp firefight, the force’s twelve objectives were secured by midday on D Day.
