‘OPERATION ANGLO ~ 1942’

Operation ANGLO was a co-ordinated attack on enemy airfields carried out by the 1st Special Boat Section on the island of Rhodes during September 1942. Inserted by Royal Navy submarine, the group of eight Marines and four Greek operators destroyed enemy aircraft which were attacking RN convoys. Only two members of the group evaded capture and recovered to the submarine waiting offshore; Marine John Duggan MM and Lt David Sutherland MC.
This planned operation was one of many for the Special Boat Service in its primary formation which has now set the precedent for a long history of maritime specialist operations in support of UK strategic interest.
